Who is God? This is one of the most important questions a person can ask. Across every culture and generation, people have sought to understand the divine being behind life, existence, and the universe. For Christians, the answer to this question is revealed through the Bible, where God is presented as the eternal, all-powerful, all-loving Creator who desires a personal relationship with each of us.
God as Creator and Sustainer
The Bible opens with the words: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1), affirming that God is the origin of everything. God is not just a force or idea, but a personal being with intelligence, will, and purpose.
He made all things (John 1:3), holds everything together (Colossians 1:17) and He knows each of us by name (Isaiah 43:1)
God is not distant or disinterested; He is intimately involved in His creation.
God’s Nature and Attributes
According to Scripture, God is:
Eternal – He has no beginning or end (Psalm 90:2)
All-Powerful (Omnipotent) – Nothing is impossible for Him (Jeremiah 32:17)
All-Knowing (Omniscient) – He knows our thoughts and future (Psalm 139:1-4)
Ever-Present (Omnipresent) – He is everywhere at all times (Jeremiah 23:24)
Holy – Completely pure and set apart from sin (Isaiah 6:3)
Just – He judges righteously (Deuteronomy 32:4)
Loving – God is love (1 John 4:8)
These attributes reveal a God who is powerful and personal, righteous and relational.
God in Three Persons: The Trinity
Christians believe in one God who exists in three distinct persons (The Trinity):
The Father – The source and sustainer of all life
The Son (Jesus Christ) – God incarnate, who came to redeem humanity
The Holy Spirit – God’s presence and power within believers
This mystery, known as the Trinity, shows that God is relational in His very essence, existing in eternal love and unity.
God’s Desire for Relationship
More than just knowing about God, the Bible teaches that we can personally know Him.
Jesus said, “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” (John 17:3)
Through faith in Jesus, we are reconciled to God, adopted into His family, and empowered to live in His purpose. This is not religion – it’s relationship.
How Can You Know God?
If you’re asking “Who is God?”, you’re already on the path of seeking. The Bible says:
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)
Here’s how you can begin:
Read the Bible – especially the Gospels
Pray honestly – speak to God like you would a trusted friend
Trust Jesus – He is the way to the Father (John 14:6)
Join a community of faith – seek out a Bible-believing church
Conclusion: Who Is God to You?
God is more than a concept, He is a living, loving, and holy being who created you with purpose and longs for you to know Him. He is both mighty and merciful, sovereign and near. The most important journey you will ever take is not through the world, but toward the heart of God.
