π Who Was King Josiah?
King Josiah ruled the kingdom of Judah at a critical moment in history. He became king at just 8 years old and reigned for 31 years (2 Kings 22β23, 2 Chronicles 34β35). Despite being so young, Josiah made some of the most radical and faithful reforms in all of Judahβs history.
βHe did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and walked in all the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left.β β 2 Kings 22:2
π The Discovery That Changed a Nation
When Josiah was 26, the high priest Hilkiah discovered the Book of the Law (most likely Deuteronomy) while repairing the temple (2 Kings 22:8). Until then, the nation had largely forgotten Godβs Word.
When Josiah heard the words read aloud, he tore his robes in grief and repentance.
βGreat is the Lordβs anger that burns against us because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book.β β 2 Kings 22:13
Josiah responded not with pride or fear, but with humble obedience. He immediately began national reforms that turned hearts back to God.
π₯ Josiah’s Bold Reforms
Josiah destroyed altars to Baal, tore down pagan idols, and purged idolatry from the land. He restored the temple, reinstated Passover celebrations, and led the people in renewing their covenant with the Lord.
His leadership was not just political – it was deeply spiritual.
βNeither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the Lord as he didβwith all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strengthβ¦β β 2 Kings 23:25
β¨ Why Josiah’s Story Still Matters Today
1. Age Doesnβt Limit Godβs Calling
Josiah began seeking God at 16, led revival at 20, and changed a nation before turning 30. God uses those who seek Him wholeheartedly, no matter their age.
2. God’s Word Sparks Revival
The rediscovery of Scripture changed Josiahβs heart, and the nationβs. The Bible is still the catalyst for revival today. When we return to Godβs Word, we realign with His will.
3. Repentance Leads to Renewal
Josiah didnβt just feel bad about sin, he took action. True repentance produces fruit. When we turn back to God, He restores what was broken.
4. Leadership Requires Courage and Conviction
Josiah stood against a corrupt system to do what was right. God calls leaders to be bold, not popular – faithful, not fearful.
π A Prayer Like Josiahβs
βLord God, I want to follow You with all my heart, soul, and strength, just like Josiah. Open my eyes to Your Word and give me a heart thatβs sensitive to sin and quick to obey. Let my life be a light that leads others back to You. I repent of compromise and ask You to renew a steadfast spirit within me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.β
π‘ Devotional Takeaway
βThe true mark of a godly leader is obedience to Godβs Word – no matter the cost.β
Josiah didnβt inherit a perfect legacy, but he left one. He shows us that revival doesnβt start with the crowd, it starts with one heart fully surrendered to God.
